Courses

Current Courses:

MARN 4060/5065 Physical Oceanography

Overview of physical properties and dynamics influencing the oceans and coastal waters. Descriptions of global water property distributions, surface mixed layer, pycnocline, surface heat fluxes, and major ocean currents. Introduction to dynamics of ocean circulation, waves, tides, and coastal circulation.

MARN 5066 River Influences in the Marine Environment

Describe influences of large and small rivers on estuaries, coastal waters, and open ocean. Discuss variability from storms, annual cycles, interannual patterns, and climate change. Study river inputs of buoyant fresh waters, sediments, nutrients, and anthropogenic substances and how they modify water densities, currents, energies, nutrient and carbon budgets, and ecosystems.

MARN 5898 Dynamics of Oceans and Atmospheres

Co-taught with Jim Edson and Kelly Lombardo

Describe how air-sea interaction influences ocean and atmosphere dynamics.  The case studies explored in this course are idealized two-dimensional sea-breeze circulation, summer estuarine and atmospheric flow patterns in Long Island Sound, and heat and momentum fluxes in the South Atlantic.

MARN 5898 Coastal Ocean Dynamics

Describe the dynamics governing circulation in the coastal ocean.  The main focus areas are the roles of tides, winds, and buoyancy in forcing flow.  The governing equations will be scaled and analyzed to describe tidal and subtidal currents in estuaries and on continental shelves.

Special Topics Courses:

MARN 5898 Matlab for Marine Sciences

This course will teach the basics of Matlab for applications in the Marine Sciences.  It is intended for new or beginning Matlab users.  Topics include programming techniques, data processing and visualization, statistics, and other analysis methods.  The course will be taught with a lecture component and practicum.  Students will work on assigned activities and an independent project that can be tailored to their research.

Past Courses:

MARN 1001/1002/1003 Introduction to Oceanography with Lab

Processes governing the geology, circulation, chemistry and biological productivity of the world’s oceans. Emphasis on the interactions and interrelationships of physical, chemical, biological and geological processes that contribute to both the stability and the variability of the marine environment. Laboratory experiments, hands-on exercises, and field observations including required cruise on research vessel.
