Research Mission

The CPRIME research group in the Department of Marine Sciences is led by Associate Professor Mike Whitney.   Our group studies physical processes in coastal waters.  Many of our efforts focus on river influences in estuaries, continental shelves, and the global ocean.

We collect and analyze observations and run hydrodynamic models to investigate mixing, currents, and transport pathways and reveal the underlying dynamics.

We apply our expertise in marine physics to interdisciplinary research on environmental issues such as climate change and emerging contaminants.  Our research findings are published in scientific journals, incorporated in undergraduate and graduate classes, and included in public outreach events.
